Sustainability can be your organisations biggest source of pain or possibility.

Business Sustainability is usually at the bottom of the agenda and yet, it has the potential to positively impact every area of your company. Simply put, organisations haven’t been given the skills or the tools to operate sustainably. Let’s change that.

Sustainability Transformations.

  • Scenic Hotel Group.

Through the COVID-19 lockdowns the team at Scenic took the time to consider how they wanted to show up for their guests once they were able to return. Sustainability was a core theme and they wanted to do things right. At the end of 2021 they jumped into the SBA and have put in place several initiatives to reduce waste, emissions and create lasting social impact.

  • I-Traffic.

The construction and infrastructure sector is notoriously difficult to improve sustainability practices. For I-Traffic, this wasn’t good enough. They knew there was more they could do more to lead the sector in best practice. The SBA has been the start of their sustainability journey and they are excited about how they can be best for people and the planet through their work

  • ESR.

Government inherently plays a role in making tangible improvements for people and the planet. In fact ESR’s purpose is to create happy and healthy communities. ESR joined the SBA because they knew that they could do more to walk the talk within the office and their internal practices.

  • Watertight Systems.

The team at Watertight Systems knew that even though they were a small company they could still play an important role in being better for people and the planet, especially in their local community. Sustainability came through in their team strategy session and so they joined the SBA to kickstart what sustainability meant for their team.

Why we created the SBA.

Sustainability has always been the common theme of my career as an environmental lawyer, transport planner and procurement specialist. Despite the potential of each of these roles and industries to make positive change for people and the planet I found that when it came to implementation the businesses and teams I was working with were running into blocks and barriers to taking real world action.

Through the COVID-19 pandemic I started to ask myself, why is it that change for sustainability is so hard? What is it that is really holding us back from doing business in a way that is not only good for the bottom line but also for people and the planet? With that the The Sustainable Business Accelerator was born.

The SBA is an alternative approach to sustainability consulting. One that is grounded in action, mindset and building culture and momentum for change.

The programme is an 18-week transformation experience for businesses who want to become leaders in sustainability. Our team will guide you step-by-step through Third Era’s unique 5 pillar methodology that is based on leading sustainability frameworks. Throughout the experience your team will learn, take action and embed sustainability in your day-to-day business operations and culture.

So if you know your business is ready to embrace sustainability and you are looking for the strategic support and accountability to go to the next level, the SBA might be for you.

Programme Overview.

The Sustainable Business Accelerator helps organisations build the foundations for sustainability that is grounded in taking action and long term impact.

Mindset is the missing link in many organisations sustainability practices. That's why in the SBA we start by cultivating your organisational culture for sustainability and change. Module 3: Data & Baselining Performance.

In order to know where we are going we need to know where we are at. A key pillar of any sustainability practice is having up to date, accurate and relevant sustainability data such as an emissions inventory, waste audit, supply chain review and diversity and inclusion statistics. Data not only plays an important part in telling your transparent sustainability story, but also in tracking year-on-year performance in order to make strategic decisions about what actions will have the biggest impact.

  • Workshop about the importance of sustainability data.

  • How to gather your unique sustainability data workshop series.

  • Tools and workbooks to gather, store and analyse sustainability data.

  • Regular oversight & guidance for the sustainability data working group.

  • Sustainability data baseline including your organisations emissions inventory.

Module 4: Action Series.

Based on your organisation's sustainability values and baseline we will create a plan for sustainable action across core areas of your business: operations/facilities; procurement; your people. We will consider opportunities for short term action and plan for longer term change. Participants will be empowered and inspired to do things differently and think creatively about business through the lens of sustainability using our project planning tools and workbooks. The aim of this module is to plan, resource and budget effectively for sustainable change.

  • Facilitated idea gathering & action plan strategy session.

  • Turning ideas to action workshop - planning, resourcing and budgeting for implementation.

  • Sustainability project planning and project management tools and playbooks.

  • Regular oversight & guidance for sustainability action working groups.

  • Sustainability consulting, support and Q&A to deliver on your priority actions.

Module 5: Systems & Processes For Continuous Improvement.

After 18 weeks of vision, data and taking action your organisation will be ready to step out into the world and communicate your sustainability journey. Module 5 prepares your team for the next phase of your sustainability evolution and enables your organisation to feel confident to continue taking action. We will celebrate all you have achieved over 18 weeks as well as setting up governance, systems and processes for ongoing success.

  • Traditional sustainability consulting services support a business with clearly defined tasks, outputs and requests (E.g. design a strategy, complete a sustainability report, calculate our GHG emissions). In short - you tell me what you’d like, I charge you an hourly rate and we get the job done!

Although each of these tasks are incredibly important in any modern sustainability practice, what is often missing is integration of these outputs into business day-to-day. I’ve seen many sustainability documents get published on websites, popped in the policy draw, only to be looked at again a year later with no change being made.

In the decade of action, we decided this wasn’t enough. So we designed an alternative approach to sustainability. One that is grounded in action, mindset and building culture and momentum for sustainable change. This is where the SBA comes in. The Sustainable Business Accelerator is an 18-week virtual transformation experience for businesses who want to become leaders in sustainability. The SBA is a uniquely created methodology based on leading sustainability frameworks. It is a fully immersive experience for your business to learn, take action and embed sustainability in your day-to-day business operations and culture.

If you want to read more about the difference between a sustainability consultant and sustainability programme you can read more on our blog here.

  • The SBA covers all 4 pillars of sustainability - environmental; cultural; social and economic. We believe that sustainability is only possible where all 4 of these pillars are addressed.

  • That’s perfect. Companies join the SBA at different stages of their sustainability journey however, where the SBA is most powerful is when organisations are just starting their sustainability journey or are missing that ‘X’ factor in their current practices.

What’s most important is that you come fully committed to leading in sustainability, willing to learn and try doing business a little bit differently.

If you are unsure where you’re at on your journey why not start with Third Era’s FREE Sustainability Audit. You can access the audit via the following link.

  • One of the key deliverables of the SBA is building your organisation's unique sustainability policy and commitment to change. However, a sustainability policy is only one part of your organisations sustainability practices. It must be accompanied by good data and a resourced action plan.

Not only this but policies are only as good as you have communicated it with your team and staff. Even if you have a sustainability policy through the SBA methodology we will review, and if required, refresh your policy to ensure that you have alignment across your teams and organisation as well as building connection and alignment to the vision.

It’s time to end back draw policies!

  • Along side the scheduled workshop sessions and project management meetings a member of the Third Era team will be allocated as your go to Sustainability Lead. With this team member you will set up a communications channel such as Teams or Slack where you will share success stories, reminders and be able to ask questions. Your sustainability lead is a member of your team for the duration of the programme who you can contact via email or phone Monday - Friday 9-5 with any questions, blocks or ideas.

  • The SBA has been specifically designed to be a virtual experience. Many organisations have offices and teams based across New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific and we wanted to make sure that all team members could be involved in the SBA experience. This means you can join from anywhere.

NB: Certain aspects of the SBA have optional in-person experiences. There are additional travel costs associated with any in person workshops and can be discussed through the onboarding process.

  • It is vital to have members that represent all departments including but not limited to finance, property, communications, marketing, operations/delivery, customer service. The SBA works best where senior managers are the key participants in the programme - we have found that change works best when there is a commitment from leadership to learn, participate and that decisions can be made more easily.

There will be staff surveys, communications, integration challenges and actions for leaders to bring back to their teams to create wider organisational participation in the programme.

  • The SBA is an 18 week programme with a variety of meeting times for different team members. On average each participating member ought to schedule for 1 hour of workshop session time per week alongside take-home integration challenges and action activities to be completed with their teams.

  • Results are company specific and will depend on what sustainability priorities your organisation commits to. However, in our experience companies have the most successful results when they have full commitment from senior management including a commitment to resourcing and being prepared to budget for change. Also where teams across an organisation are involved in the sustainability process. Sustainability is not something that can be delivered in a silo by one team. It needs to be integrated across the organisation.

Where teams struggle is when they are asked to “do sustainability” with no further support for delivery.
